Creative Every Day Challenge – Day #29.
Today, continuing with the painting I started two days ago, I was mesmerized, as usual, at how much art TEACHES me when I trust the process and let my intuition guide my hands.
The lesson I received with this simple booklet cover (that wasn’t cooperating at all when I started) is coming right after the process that I’m sharing with you below.
So taking from where I stopped two days ago (again, you can see the beginning steps here), I drew some images and added more depth to the background to bring them to life.
I started with a contrasting color…
and worked that red all over.
Then I added some blue (I seem to be in a “blue” phase)…
And started a dance between adding colors…
…and removing some of them.
Adding…
…and removing…. several times.
Then it was time to define the trees and the butterfly with black. Oooo, how pretty :)
And one of my favorite parts: adding super fun details with metallic gel pens.
Metallic gel pens are the BOMB.
The butterfly got a lot of metallic colors. I added a quote on the right side…. and 3 little green beads to the upper left corner.
When I found this quote, by Richard Buckminster Fuller, I couldn’t stop smiling at the connection between the experience I had when I started this piece and the end result.
The quote says: “There is nothing in the caterpillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly.”
Here is the final piece:
The butterfly looks really awesome!
Here are a couple of close-ups of the butterfly:
I took a few shots outside too, and that really brought out the blue. I liked that, so when I uploaded the pictures to my computer, I played with the color a little and here are a couple of close-up shots with the blue accentuated.
Pretty cool for something that “didn’t work” in the beginning!
Just like the quote says, when I started this painting there was nothing on this page that told me this was going to look so beautiful in the end.
You might think that there’s nothing in YOU that might help you BELIEVE you are going to be big, achieve your goals or be everything you always dreamed of being.
But just like the caterpillar, the fact the your GREATNESS doesn’t show YET, doesn’t mean it’s not inside to bloom at the right moment.
How many butterflies would we have in the world if the caterpillars had any doubts that they could TRANSFORM themselves into magestic butterflies???
And when a caterpillar sees a butterflies, does it KNOW?
Even if you can’t see everything you can become, doesn’t mean you won’t.
You are already great. Stay the course.

WHATTA GAL. SANDRA!!! Holly has a wonderful friend in you!!
Thank you, Mr. Bob! I am SO happy to see you here! Come back and visit me more. I love your daughter and love you for bringing her to the world (and my life). xoxo
Sandra, you have no idea how much I needed that pep talk today! Thanks! I really like how you showed us the “process” of your painting. Sometimes I think one of my pieces isn’t worth keeping, but if I come back to it later and add a little of this and a little of that, sometimes it works out after all.
Hi, Kristi, I’m glad to hear my post helped you. It’s easy to get stuck but you’re right – leaving the painting alone for a while and coming back to it with fresh eyes does wonders. Sometimes that’s all we need to turn everything around
Great post Sandra! I really needed to hear those words today….thanks girl!
Thanks for visiting, Dominy! I’m glad you enjoyed my post! Hugs!

Love it. Have used metallic paint, but not gel pens. Must give it a try.
You’ll fall in love, Terri. Be careful – they’re addicting
